Optometry FAQs - Your Top Eye Questions Answered

Do you take my insurance? What are my benefits?

We will attempt to authorize your insurance before you come to your appointment. To do this, we will likely need some of the following information: name of insurance, name of insurance holder, birthday, last four digits of your social security number, zip code. We will review your vision benefits with you at the time of your exam. Please also verify your benefits because sometimes there are discrepancies.

If medical insurance will be used, we will use the information on your medical card. Please bring an updated medical card as well.

Will I be dilated?

Most likely at some point you will be dilated. Dilation helps Dr. Chao with a better view of the outer structure of your eyes and overall eye health. Some people cannot see to drive after dilation, and most cannot read for a couple of hours. If you have never been dilated, our policy is that you need to bring a driver/escort. Also, dilation will enlarge your pupils so indoor and outdoor light will be very bright. Bring your sunglasses, or we will give you disposable ones. If you have a busy schedule and need to reschedule your dilation, we will be happy to accommodate you.

What do I need to bring?

Bring all of your eye wear (including contacts, CL Rx or contact lens boxes or foil tops, glasses, sunglasses), and a contact lens case. Please also bring any updated medical and/or vision insurance cards.

How long does it take to get my contacts and glasses?

Typically contacts take 3-5 business days. Glasses typically take 1-2 weeks. Please inquire if you need a rush order.
